Lynne Manning, while principal and director of interior design at FreemanWhite, Inc., developed the interior design and furnishings for the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Emergency Department. The architecture was designed by McMillan Smith Architects of Greenville, SC. This 50,000 SF Emergency Department was designed to accommodate up to 100,000 visits annually and included trauma rooms, fast track, a chest pain unit, and a women and children’s unit. It was critical that the architectural design and the interior design work together to create one unified building design.
The design incorporates wayfinding elements in the ceiling and floor at critical decision junctions, assisting the visitor and patient to more easily navigate their way through the hospital. As was the goal with Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, we incorporated stress-reducing elements to create an environment that offers a patient and their family the ability to feel better both physically and psychologically. For example, lighting is subdued and the corridor walls are reinforced with stainless steel, which also serves as a pleasant design element. The use of wood-grained plastic laminate, bubble walls in the lobby, and expansive views to the outside all serve to create a friendly and appealing space.
